Ian Elsner
Animation is a unifying medium.
As a child, thinking of science and art as mutually exclusive, I focused my energies on the technical side of computer animation - not for the sake of art but for the scientific goal of simulating reality to better understand it. The dramatic change in this way of thinking about art since then cannot be underestimated. Suddenly, I realized that reality could be understood without the need to simulate it, and indeed that a deeper meaning arises from the art. Seeing animation as a perfect canvas for a story, do to its unification of several mediums, I began to create for the purpose of narrative.
The strengths of my work can be found in the narrative. Most of my pieces exist at the crossroads of science and art, taking technological skill and rendering it into films. Because of the wide appeal of films as a medium, public showing of my works is an important part of the artistic process, forcing me to balance my own individual artistic expression with pursuit of making it universal enough for a wide audience.
The actual story lines sometimes draw heavily on my own personal experiences, travel, and development, while sometimes on the writings of scientists like Rickard Dawkins.
